The developers of RAM: Random Access Mayhem, Andrew Cunningham and Toby Murray, aimed to create a unique roguelike experience where players can swap into enemy bodies upon death. This mechanic led to the challenge of designing enemies that could also be playable characters and balancing the game’s energy system to prevent abuse of the swapping mechanic. Upgrades were tailored to each playable enemy type, encouraging players to cultivate builds for each character. The style system rewards players for fighting impressively, merging efficiency with style. Visually, the world and characters were designed to be distinct and easily recognizable, with visual cues to help players navigate the fast-paced combat.
