Paradox Interactive has written down SEK 355 million ($37.4 million) in development costs for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 after the game underperformed post-launch. Despite being pleased with Sumo Digital’s renewed development efforts, Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester acknowledged that sales fell short of expectations, attributing the misestimation to their lack of experience in the genre. Looking ahead, they aim to focus on core areas while still planning for two expansions for the game.
Given the challenges Paradox has faced, it raises the question: How can publishers better align their expectations and development strategies with the actual market appeal of niche games?
