Scopely, a Saudi-owned developer, has agreed to acquire Niantic’s popular gaming apps, including Pokémon Go, for $3.5bn. Niantic is pivoting towards artificial intelligence with a new focus on “geospatial AI”, creating maps for smart glasses and robots. This deal is part of Saudi Arabia’s strategy to become a global gaming hub, with the government investing nearly $40bn in the industry. The kingdom has also hosted major gaming tournaments and will host the first Olympic Esports Games in 2027.
